2-Month-Old May Need Surgery to Repair Injuries from Neglect

The 32-year-old mother of a 2-month-old has been accused of causing serious physical harm to her child from severe long-term neglect.

According to reports, the Indiana Department of Child Services in Vanderburgh recently received a report about a situation involving the possible neglect of a 2-month-old baby girl in an Evansville home. The agency reported that they had many prior interactions with her mother and that all her children other than the infant had previously been taken from the home.

When DCS went to the residence and investigated the claims, they said they found the home was unkempt and unsanitary. When they wanted to check the baby’s body to see if she had any visible suspicious marks, the woman refused to consent.

The infant, who was reportedly smaller than normal for her age and appeared malnourished, was removed from the home by DCS, and she was taken to the hospital for medical assessment and treatment.

It was reported that the doctors found rashes all over the baby’s body, and she had a yeast infection on her neck. She had a terrible diaper rash, and her urethra was almost fully closed. The medical staff believes she may need surgery in the future to repair the damage. The doctors also learned that the infant had not been seen by a pediatrician since her birth.

The child’s mother was placed under arrest by the Evansville Police Department on August 11. She was booked in the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center, and she is facing charges on suspicion of one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury. The woman is being held in lieu of a $1,000 bond.
