Two youngsters were reportedly left at home without proper supplies or supervision while their mother flew to Florida with her boyfriend for a three-day vacation.
36-year-old Kerry Caviasca and her two kids, ages 8 and 11, live in Watertown, Connecticut. She teaches at a middle school in the Waterbury School District.
It is reported that Caviasca is no longer married to the father of the children, and she is currently dating someone.
November 20, Caviasca was reportedly left for her trip to Florida.
Caviasca allegedly left her young son and daughter, along with the family dog, at their Watertown residence.
She reportedly communicated with the children through text messages while she was away.
In the messages, Caviasca reportedly instructed the kids to stay in the basement and out of sight until she returned from her trip.
She allegedly permitted them to use the bathroom without turning the lights and said there was plenty of food in the basement for them to eat. Caviasca also sent food delivered by UberEats and allegedly had the children retrieve it after it was left at the door.
Caviasca allegedly told the children that they were to stay home from school on Monday and to stay in the basement until she got back that evening.
Shortly after Caviasca returned, the children’s father looked through their text messages. He reported to the authorities that he learned the kids were left alone while his ex-wife was on vacation.
An investigation was opened, and both children were interviewed. They reportedly confirmed that they were alone in the basement for three days when their mother was away.
When the police spoke with Caviasca, she allegedly told them that she did go to Florida on the weekend in question, but that her brother was at the home taking care of the children.
On January 15, Caviasca was taken into custody. She is facing charges of second-degree reckless endangerment and risk of injury of a child, and her bond was set at $5,000.
The police called Caviasca’s brother to ask him if he was with the children on the weekend in question. According to reports, the man claimed he did not remember and said he did not want to be a part of the situation.
