Late in the morning on August 17, the recorded temperature in South Bexar County was over 100 degrees. A few hours earlier, the mother of a 2-year-old gave her daughter breakfast, and afterwards, they went to lie down together. The woman dozed off, and while she napped, the youngster, who was wearing only a diaper, went outside without her mother’s knowledge. According to reports, a neighbor was driving by and spotted the running around near the road without an adult present. He called his wife to tell her about the situation.
The authorities were notified, and when law enforcement arrived, they reported that the youngster was sitting on the sidewalk in a soiled diaper. The deputies went to the residence where she lives with her parents, and her mother reportedly explained that she hadn’t realized her daughter had gone outside. They searched inside the residence, and it was reported that the dwelling was found in an unclean and unsanitary state with garbage, pet excrement, roaches, and rotten food scattered around. The child’s father was not present, so the authorities contacted him and asked him to return home.
Both parents were taken into custody and booked into the Bexar County jail. They are each facing a preliminary charge of felony child endangerment. According to facility records, they were each released the following day after posting $65,000 bonds.
The toddler was checked at a local hospital to make sure she did not need medical care, and Child Protective Services was notified.
