A couple from New Jersey has been charged after they reportedly threw a party with nearly 50 guests while their five children were amongst the crowd.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy issued an executive order to the people of the state on March 21 placing a temporary ban on all social gatherings with the intention of curtailing the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The social gathering, which reportedly had large numbers of people in close proximity to each other, was allegedly impeding traffic due to the number of guests hanging out together in the road. Other attendees were reportedly seen congregating on the porch and the yard in front of the Silber’s dwelling.
The Lakewood Police Department caught wind of the event and headed to the location.
When they arrived, the police reportedly discovered the mob of partiers and surmised that the Silber’s home appeared to be the initial site of the event. They additionally reported that the five children were among the partygoers.
The officers told the people in attendance that they needed to leave the party and go home, and they discussed the alleged incident with the Silbers.
Eliezer Silber was cited by an officer for five counts of child endangerment, in addition to a charge for violating a rule or regulation adopted by the governor (Executive Order No. 107).
Miriam Silber was also issued a citation for five counts of child endangerment.
An Ocean County prosecutor cited his sworn duty to protect and serve, in addition to reminding that his “office will prosecute any individual who defies or breaks the law, State of Emergency or otherwise.”
The pair are will appear at the Ocean County Superior Court in Toms River regarding the allegations.
