AIDS-Tainted Hypodermic Used as Weapon in Robbery

A woman was arrested last week after allegedly using a hypodermic needle she claimed was contaminated with AIDS to threaten a store clerk before she stole money.

In the early evening on December 14, a woman later identified as 34-year-old Ashley Demers visited a Seasons Corner Market in Raynham.

When she went into the store, Demers allegedly had a hypodermic in hand, and she reportedly said that it held a substance that was tainted with AIDS.

After she allegedly threatened the clerk with the needle, Demers made off with cash, but the amount she reportedly stole was not disclosed.

When Demers left the market, the authorities were notified about the alleged theft. A description of Demers, her car, and her license plate number was shared with the Raynham Police Department.

The authorities issued the information to surrounding agencies, and troopers with the Massachusetts State Police saw what they believed to be Demers’ vehicle driving on a highway in Marion.

When they tried to pull Demers over, she reportedly refused to stop and attempted to exit the highway before crashing her vehicle.

The authorities reported that the vehicle Demers was driving appeared to be the same one that was allegedly involved in a robbery that happened in New Bedford, where Demers resides.

Demers was taken into custody and booked at the State Police Dartmouth Barracks, and she is facing charges for suspicion of armed robbery. It was reported that she will likely be charged for additional infractions, some of which relate to her alleged attempt to flee from the police. She may also face charges if the authorities find that she was the alleged perpetrator in the New Bedford incident.

At her arraignment on Tuesday, it was ordered that Demers would be held on bail.
