Amish Horse and Buggy Operator Arrested for DUI

An Amish man in Pennsylvania was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol after police allegedly saw him navigating a horse and buggy so fast that caused the wheels to spark.

20-year-old Ray Byler resides in the unincorporated community of Sigel in Jefferson County.

In the afternoon on February 20, the Brookville Police Department received more than one call about someone who was operating an Amish horse and buggy in an unsafe manner.

According to reports, police officers headed out to try to find the horse-drawn coach, but they did not come across it.

Later in the day, the police were driving around the local area when they reported that they saw someone in a buggy being pulled by a horse. They reported that the operator was being reckless while driving down the road.

It was reported that officers began trailing behind the buggy to keep an eye on it.

When the carriage pulled around a corner, the pursuing police reported that the driver abruptly activated the braking mechanism. The buggy reportedly skidded across the road while throwing sparks from the wheels.

The operator of the buggy saw the law enforcement officers and stopped the cart on the side of the road.

It was reported that when the police talked to the man, they identified him as Byler. They also said that they believed he was drunk.

He was asked if he had imbibed any alcoholic beverages, and Byler reportedly told the officers that he drank a couple of beers.

After reportedly failing a roadside sobriety test, Byler was taken to the hospital so they could draw his blood to determine his BAC, but he would not consent to the procedure.

Byler is facing charges for one count of misdemeanor DUI and one count for careless and reckless driving.
