A 37-year-old man from Missouri is facing a slew of charges after he allegedly got into a standoff with the police that involved children and firearms.
Early in the morning on February 6, officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety dispatched to an address in Sikeston after someone called in a report about an assault.
When they arrived, the deputies reported that two youngsters were outside the residence. A deputy spoke to them, and they reportedly said that the man in the home had a gun and that a sleeping child was also inside.
According to reports, the deputies heard a sound come from inside the residence that they determined was a gunshot.
The deputies let themselves into the home and found the sleeping youngster.
It was reported that the suspect yelled at the deputies and told them to leave the apartment.
The deputies complied with his order for them to leave, and they took the child with them. While they were on their way out, it was reported that the man fired off additional gunshots.
He shut the door and reportedly barricaded himself inside.
Negotiators on the scene tried to get the man to surrender, but he held them off for many hours.
The authorities determined that the best course of action would be to enter the home to detain the man. They reported that they found him in a room with a pistol.
The suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Scott County Jail. He is expected to face several charges, including three counts of first-degree assault-special victim, one count of first-degree assault, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, armed criminal action, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a firearm, and resisting/interfering with the arrest of a felon.
