Douglas County Commissioner Fighting DUI Charge

After a reported BAC of nearly double the legal limit, the Douglas County Commissioner is disputing the criminal charge against him for accusations that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Kyle Steinburg is the elected County Commissioner of Douglas County, Washington. He has held the position for two terms beginning in 2016.

Around 1:30 am on June 15, Steinburg and his passengers were reportedly in his vehicle at a McDonald’s drive-thru in East Wenatchee.

The car in front of Steinburg became suspicious that the man was drunk, and they called to report it to the authorities.

An officer was sent to the location, and when she arrived, Steinburg was still in the drive-thru lane.

After receiving his order, Steinburg reportedly went to the parking lot for a County maintenance building a few doors down.

According to body-worn camera footage from the officer, when he was asked about the situation, Steinburg reportedly told the officer he was retrieving his passengers from their night out gambling since they needed a designated driver.

Steinburg complied with the officer when he was asked to take a roadside sobriety test. The camera recording displayed the officer demonstrating how to perform one of the activities, and she had her arms extended a bit to the sides.

When Steinburg did the required task, he held his arms out to the sides causing the officer to assert he did not pass.

Steinburg was detained and taken to the police department for a breathalyzer test.

It was recorded in the arrest report that he blew .145 and .154.

Steinburg was processed and charged with a misdemeanor DUI.

He was released from custody, and at his court appearance, Steinburg challenged the allegations. According to his lawyer, they will present proof solidifying his innocence at the appropriate time. Steinburg’s attorney plans to include the body-worn camera footage as a part of the defense.

His lawyer announced that Steinburg does not plan to give up his position as County Commissioner based on being “accused, but not convicted, of a misdemeanor.”
