DUI Suspect Stuck in Water After Speeding Down Crowded Beach

A Florida woman with a reported blood-alcohol level of over .15 is facing charges after allegedly speeding down New Smyrna Beach until her car ended up in the ocean.

On the afternoon of May 27, several people were enjoying the day with their canine companions at the Smyrna Dunes Park on New Smyrna beach, when they were reportedly abruptly interrupted by a potentially dangerous event.

A blue vehicle came speeding down the beach towards them, and it almost struck one of the children in the park. The automobile was believed to be going at least 50 MPH when it zipped through the populated area.

According to reports, a woman was behind the wheel and had one passenger in the vehicle with her. The car was prevented from continuing when it got stuck in the water.

When deputies from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrived, they spoke to the woman with their body-worn camera turned on. The driver told the officer that she was accused of nearly hitting a youngster, but she did not believe that happened. She informed them that the incident occurred when she was trying to make a U-turn.

Police helicopters recorded video showing the scene from above, and the vehicle’s tires were half-deep in the water. The car’s back end was facing the horizon with the front facing the beach.

The driver, who lives in Orlando, was placed under arrest, and booked into the Volusia County Jail. She is expected to face charges on suspicion of driving under the influence with .15 BAC or higher, and reckless driving, in addition to a traffic citation for failure to obey a traffic control device. She was jailed in lieu of a $1500 bond.
