A security guard working at a private school in Florida may face felony charges after he allegedly shot a coworker in the face while showing him his gun.
Lauderdale Lakes resident Julian Antonio Suarez is a security guard for Kent Security who has assignments on school campuses.
On Thursday morning, Suarez was at the Lower campus of the Sagemont School in Weston, which is a private institution that caters to children from 3-years-old through 5th grade.
The 55-year-old, who is not commissioned for carrying a gun on the Sagemont campus, was reportedly standing in the parking lot at the school with a maintenance employee when he allegedly pulled out his weapon to give the man a look at the piece.
Suarez, who was reportedly going to work at another school where he is authorized to carry a firearm later that afternoon, unwittingly allegedly caused the gun to fire.
The bullet hit the maintenance worker in the eye, and Suarez brought the injured employee to the Cleveland Clinic and left him there before going home.
Just after noon, the Broward Sheriff’s Office was notified by the medical facility after they interacted with the wounded worker, and the incident was reported.
The authorities located and arrested Suarez, who has no prior criminal record, and he was charged for suspicion of felony possession of a firearm on school property. He was held in lieu of a $7500 bond, and upon his release, he has been ordered to stay away from the Sagemont School grounds.
Suarez’s public defender said his client’s job duties show that he is required to be an armed security guard, and that he believes the event was a “stupid mistake.”
