It was reported that just before noon on February 18th, someone notified the authorities to report that their car had been stolen from the Kent Liquor Mart parking lot.
Officers with the Dover Police Department went to the location and spoke with the alleged victim. Surveillance cameras were pointed at the spot from which the vehicle disappeared, and the police viewed the videos to try to identify the suspect.
About 20 minutes later, patrolling officers saw a vehicle that matched the description of the one reportedly stolen from the liquor store. They watched the car turn a corner and tried to perform a traffic stop.
According to reports, the man allegedly ignored the police and kept driving. After a short time, he reportedly stopped the car in the middle of the street.
The police approached the vehicle, and they reported that they believed the 40-year-old driver was the person they saw in the liquor store parking lot surveillance video. They reportedly asked the man to get out of the car.
The suspect reportedly would not comply with their demand, and the officers pulled him out of the vehicle.
According to a report released by the Dover Police Department, the suspect “showed signs of impairment once he was taken into custody.”
The man was placed under arrest and was processed at the Dover Police Department before he was jailed in the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $7000 bond. He is expected to face charges of theft of a motor vehicle, third offense DUI, resisting arrest, disregarding a police officer signal, and driving on a suspended/revoked license.
