Cops Post on Facebook Using Suspect’s Phone

When South Carolina deputies were trying to detain a suspect for drug-related allegations the man ran away, but reportedly dropped his cell phone during his hurried departure leaving the authorities in possession of the device.

Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputies were in pursuit a suspect on Friday when he was able to bypass a confrontation with them by successfully sprinting away.

As the deputies chased the man they found a cell phone laying on the ground that they have alleged dropped off of and belongs to the man that they were attempting to arrest.

Upon inspection of the phone’s contents, it was purported that it belonged to a man identified as 30-year old Shawn Hagan.

While using the cell phone the police were able to access Shawn Hagan’s Facebook account. They decided to drop a taunting message on his page telling him that they had his phone and that he could get in touch with them and they would relinquish it.

The sheriff’s department posted on their own Facebook page regarding the dropped phone and releasing the name of the suspect to the public. They asked for assistance in learning where they might find Hagan, and added the salty tip, “next time, secure all valuables before running.”

Thousands of people read the outreach and helped it to make its way around the social network until the many responses to the authorities gave them enough assistance to find out where Hagan was by the following day.

Hagan was taken into custody just before 11:00 pm for suspicion of possession of and manufacturing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, and evading arrest.
