At approximately 10:00 PM on March 24, a 47-year-old man from Fort Hall was driving a Toyota Camry in Chubbuck. He reportedly stopped at a gas station, and while he was there, he allegedly swiped a case of beer.
Police found the man driving near the highway shortly after he left the gas station. They performed a traffic stop, and the driver pulled over, but he allegedly sped off before they could approach him.
There was heavy snowfall, and the authorities decided it would be too dangerous if they tried to follow the Camry at an accelerated speed. They cautiously drove in the same direction until they saw the vehicle had drifted off the road and got stuck in the snow.
It was reported that the man initially refused to get out of the car, and instead told the police that he wanted to be shot. Eventually, he exited the vehicle and was detained.
After he refused to take a breathalyzer test, the police transported him to Portneuf Medical Center for a blood test. The man reportedly threatened to become physically violent with the staff and the officers if they tried to perform the procedure. According to reports, it took three police officers and a deputy to hold him down before the medical staff could draw the sample.
The suspect was booked into the Bannock County Jail. He is expected to face charges of felony driving under the influence and misdemeanor charges of petit theft and resisting arrest.
The man is being held in lieu of a $25,000 bond. According to reports, if he is convicted, he could spend up to 11 years in prison.
