Fleeing Dad Abandoned Injured Child After DUI Crash

A 10-year-old boy was reportedly left behind with injuries after his dad fled the scene of a four-vehicle accident he allegedly caused by driving under the influence.

Late in the afternoon on December 11, 29-year-old Christopher Hernandez, a resident of Joliet, Illinois, was driving around town with his 10-year-old son.

Hernandez reportedly slammed into the back of the car in front of him, and it caused the vehicle to skid erratically on the road. Hernandez’s car also began to skid from the impact.

Two additional vehicles were struck: one allegedly by Hernandez and one by the driver of the other skidding vehicle.

It was reported that Hernandez’s son was hurt and in need of medical attention, and the man grabbed the child and walked away from the accident site.

Officers with the Joliet Police Department went to the scene of the crash, and they found that Hernandez was not present.

When the authorities began to search, they reported that they found Hernandez’s son inside a local store. The man reportedly left the child, who had a broken leg, at the market and continued to flee.

The youngster was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, and the police continued looking for Hernandez.

Though it took some time, Hernandez was eventually located and apprehended. The police noted that he did not fight them.

Hernandez was taken into custody and booked into the Will County Adult Detention Facility. He is facing charges for four counts of aggravated DUI, DUI, endangering the life or health of a child, failure to remain at the scene of a personal injury accident, and obstructing/resisting a peace officer. His bail was set at $250,000.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the accident.
