A reportedly intoxicated man from Eastern Iowa is facing multiple charges after allegedly using a United States flag to choke his mother.
On the morning of October 21, a woman who lives in North Liberty was paid a visit by her 39-year-old son. According to reports, the man was carrying an American flag when he went inside, and he appeared as if he had been drinking alcohol. He was also reportedly angry, and he allegedly became physically abusive towards his mom. He reportedly said he wished she was dead, and he allegedly began choking her by wrapping the flag around her throat until she fell on the floor while she struggled to breathe. The alleged attack continued until the woman’s boyfriend was able to stop her son. After he left the house and drove away, the authorities were notified about the incident.
It was reported that the man was speeding, which caught the attention of an officer who noticed that the license plate number matched the one on the vehicle the suspect was driving. When they tried to perform a traffic stop, the man reportedly sped up and drove a short distance before stopping. The police reported that he was uncooperative during the entire arrest.
The man was booked into the Johnson County Jail. He is facing preliminary charges of felony attempted murder, felony eluding while exceeding the speed limit by 25 mph or more, misdemeanor aggravated assault with intent to inflict serious injury, misdemeanor aggravated first-degree harassment, and a serious misdemeanor for operating under the influence while intoxicated (first offense). According to facility records, he is currently being held on a $30,000 bond. If he is released, he is not allowed to have contact with his mother.
