Men Sleeping at Gas Pump Bit Deputies and K9

Two men who were reportedly sleeping in a car in front of a gas pump were arrested after allegedly attacking sheriff’s deputies who were checking on them.

On the morning of February 3, two 26-year-old men and a 4-year-old girl were in a car parked in front of a gas pump at a 7-Eleven in Davenport. The vehicle was there for a while, and someone notified the authorities. When deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office went to investigate, they reported that they found the men and child sleeping in the car. When they were awoken, the situation reportedly took a turn for the worse.

One of the deputies intervened when they believed the driver was trying to start the car, and the passenger got out of the vehicle and allegedly tried to get away. According to reports, the men bit and attacked the law enforcement officers. One of them also allegedly bit the ear of a K9 at the scene.

Both suspects were taken into custody and booked into the Polk County Jail on multiple charges. The man related to the child is facing preliminary charges of two counts of resisting an officer without violence, one count of grand theft of a firearm, one count of negligent child abuse without bodily harm, and one count of battery on a law enforcement officer. He was released from the facility after posting a $17,000 bond.

The other individual is facing preliminary charges of one count of possession of cocaine, one count of possession of over 20 grams of cannabis, one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, one count of battery on a law enforcement officer, one count of resisting an officer with violence, one count of resisting an officer without violence, one count of touch or strike causing injury to a police dog or fire dog, one count of possession of counterfeit license plates, and one count of driving with a permanently suspended or revoked license. According to jail records, he is being held in lieu of a $33,000 bond.

The Florida Department of Children and Families was notified about the 4-year-old.
