Earlier this month, a middle school student in Highland went to the nurse’s office and asked if they would put Vaseline on his arm.
It was reported that when the nurse looked at the boy’s limb, she saw his name tattooed across his forearm in large letters.
The law in New York State stipulates that no person under the age of 18 is allowed to receive a tattoo, and parental consent does not override the law.
The school nurse notified the authorities about the permanent tattoo on the child’s arm.
The Town of Lloyd Police Department investigated the situation, and they learned that the child lives in a motel room in Ulster County with his sibling and his mother.
The police believe that someone came into the room to give the boy the permanent ink tattoo. They additionally asserted that the child’s mother gave permission to the artist for the work to be done.
On October 4, the boy’s mother was placed under arrest on suspicion of endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
The 33-year-old woman was released from custody after being given a citation that ordered her to appear at the Town of Lloyd Court on October 20 regarding the charge.
According to the authorities, they are still determining whether the person who allegedly administered the tattoo to the child will also be charged with child endangerment.
The boy was removed from his home, and he is in the custody of child protective services.
