Worker Shot in Leg During Brawl with Chicken Thief

A North Carolina man was arrested after he was allegedly involved in the shooting of a store employee who allegedly caught him trying to steal chicken.

On the evening of January 28, a man went to the Walmart Neighborhood Market in the Charlotte area to pick up dog food and chicken. When he was using the self-checkout, he allegedly did not scan the items. An employee believed he was trying to steal the food, and they approached the shopper to address the situation.

According to reports, when the worker talked to the man, he rang up the dog food. As he was walking out, the employee asserted that the customer was still trying to take the chicken without paying for it and he attempted to snatch the package from the alleged fowl thief.

Things quickly became physical between the pair, and they continued grappling until other employees intervened and diffused the fight. The customer then left the market.

The events that followed resulted in one of the store employees getting shot in the leg.

It was reported that shortly after the man walked out, he came back inside with a gun. It was unclear whether he had the weapon with him during his initial visit. He reportedly began arguing with several employees, and another fight broke out. The gun allegedly fell on the ground, and it fired a round when everyone involved was scrambling to grab it. One of the workers was struck in the leg by the bullet.

The man was taken into custody and booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail. He is facing preliminary charges for one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and one count of misdemeanor larceny. At the time this was written, jail records show he is still being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
