A man has been charged with first-degree robbery after he allegedly walked into a Voodoo Doughnuts with an ax and proceeded to steal sweets from the establishment.
Around 3:30 am last Saturday, a man reportedly entered the downtown Southwest Portland Voodoo Doughnuts and reportedly wanted a box of the well-known, unique pastries that they offer.
As reported by Portland Police, the man, later identified as 40-year-old Christopher L. James, was allegedly carrying an ax that was just over a foot in length when he went inside the store. He allegedly used the tool to intimidate the workers into allowing him to walk behind the service counter and help himself to a box of the doughnuts in the display case.
James reportedly did not hurt anyone, nor did he take any money from the establishment, but a hatchet was later found inside the doughnut shop and assumed to have been left behind him.
When the police started to search the area for James, they reported that they saw the man about a block away from the store. James was allegedly still enjoying the sweet snacks out of a box donning the Voodoo Doughnuts logo when they caught up to him.
The police reported that James attempted to escape interacting with them by running off, and they chased him for approximately two blocks before he was detained.
James was placed under arrest, and he was taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center. He is facing charges for suspicion of first-degree robbery for the alleged length to which he went in order to satisfy his sweet tooth.
