A Pennsylvania man who was reportedly found passed out behind the wheel allegedly dragged an officer over four yards with his vehicle while trying to escape.
Early in the morning on October 4, an officer with the Penn Hills Police Department was alerted by a tow truck driver about a car accident. The tow truck driver reported that a Chevy Equinox had veered off the road.
The officer located the vehicle nearby. He reportedly saw the driver behind the wheel with the engine turned on and assumed that the man was asleep.
After the officer woke him, the driver, a 22-year-old from Wilkinsburg, said a friend was on their way to meet him.
The officer believed there was a gun in the car, and he told the driver to get out of the vehicle.
According to reports, a second officer arrived, and the man struggled and resisted when they tried to physically force him out of the car.
The driver’s side door was open, and one of the officers was standing next to it when the driver allegedly hit the gas with the car in reverse.
The officer behind the vehicle was allegedly nearly struck, and the officer next to the driver was reportedly dragged more than 20 feet. The car came to a stop when it hit a building.
The man reportedly got out of the car and ran off.
It was reported that he was found sitting on the ground near where the vehicle hit the building.
When he approached, the officer said the suspect tried to run away, so he tased him.
The vehicle was inspected. The authorities reported that they found two bricks of heroin, two bags of crack cocaine, one bag of marijuana, and Xanax.
The suspect was placed under arrest and booked into the Allegheny County Jail. He is expected to face several charges, including multiple counts of aggravated assault, drug possession with intent to deliver, fleeing police, resisting arrest, carrying an unlicensed firearm, and additional traffic counts.
When he went before a judge on October 5, it was ruled that he would be held without bond. The judge deemed him a danger to the community due to the nature of the charges.
His next court appearance is scheduled for October 17.
