4-Year-Old Student with .29 BAC Spent Days in ICU

A child’s teacher was arrested after it was suspected that she gave an intoxicant to a 4-year-old Alabama girl who was taken to the hospital and found with an exceedingly high level of ethanol in her system.

April 28, a student at Collins-Rhodes Elementary School in Mobile went limp in her classroom and had to be taken to the nurse’s office. When the parents of the girl, age 4, were notified, they picked her up from the school and took her to the USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit. When the doctors studied the results of the toxicology tests, it was reported that the child, who was also drooling and listless, had a 0.29 blood alcohol concentration. The girl was treated in the ICU for two days before her parents took her home to continue recovering.

The authorities were notified about the incident, and an investigation was opened. On May 6, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office began working on the case, and detectives talked to the child about what occurred. The youngster reportedly told them she felt sick a little while after her teacher gave her something to drink.

On May 21, the teacher was taken into custody and booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail. She is facing a preliminary charge of aggravated child abuse, and the school district placed her on administrative leave as a result of the allegations. She was released two days later after posting a $25,000 bond and agreeing to regular drug and alcohol tests.

It was reported that the youngster will not be able to go back to school for the rest of the year.
