A Florida woman with dementia and mobility issues was found living in a tent outside her home after investigators learned she had allegedly been left without adequate care for about a week.
Concerns about the woman’s living conditions were reported by the Department of Children and Families, prompting the authorities to begin an investigation. The 81-year-old alleged victim said she had been staying in the tent for several days after her caregiver left.
Authorities said the tent was far enough from the residence that the alleged victim could not make her way back inside on her own. Investigators also reported that the shelter contained a mattress and a few small appliances, but the woman had only a little bit of food and water available.
It was further alleged that the woman had been given adult diapers but had no one to help her change them. Because of her dementia and difficulty walking, authorities believed she was unable to properly care for herself without help. It was alleged she remained in those conditions for approximately one week.
The alleged victim suffered a fall and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities said she was expected to be discharged to a nursing facility after receiving medical care.
According to investigators, the caregiver had been responsible for the woman’s care for about two years. The alleged victim’s son, who was away for work at the time, reportedly told the authorities that the caregiver had recently decided she no longer wanted the job. Investigators alleged the caregiver left for Texas without making arrangements for anyone else to provide care for the woman.
The caregiver was taken into custody on suspicion of neglect of an elderly person without great bodily harm.
