Chief of Miami-Dade Corrections Arrested for DUI

The Civilian Division Chief of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department is facing charges after allegedly driving under the influence and crashing his car into another vehicle.

Late in the evening on July 6, the 50-year-old man was reportedly driving his county-issued Toyota Camry in Kendall, Florida, when he was involved in a car accident with an SUV with two people inside. The authorities were notified, and troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol went to the location to assist and investigate. When they got there, they noted that a woman had been driving the SUV, and her teenage daughter was in the passenger seat when the crash occurred. When the driver talked to a trooper, she told them it was the man who was driving the other car that caused the accident.

According to reports, the man, identified as the chief of Miami-Dade Corrections, was asleep in the passenger seat when troopers found him. He allegedly smelled like alcohol, and when he woke up and talked to the troopers, he reportedly showed several indicators of possible intoxication. He allegedly told the troopers he had a few drinks, and his breath test showed a BAC of .236 and .231.

The man was taken into custody, and after visiting HCA, the Florida Doral Emergency Room, he was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail. He is facing preliminary charges of DUI, and DUI causing damage to property or a person. Reports indicate that he was released on bail and that the suspect was placed on administrative leave from his job. At the time this was written, there had been no reports of injuries to anyone involved in the accident.
