Couple Accused of Attacking Men at Youth Softball Game

According to the authorities, on October 24, a dispute over cheering at a girls’ softball game turned violent at a park in Sugar Land, Texas.

The couple said they were at the game to support their daughter, and the husband told officers that one man confronted them for cheering before the pitcher threw the ball to a batter, rather than waiting until after the pitch. The disagreement continued when a second man approached and complained about their cheering.

The husband said one of the men elbowed him in the chest and the physical fight began when the second man did the same. He allegedly acknowledged punching that man, who fell and hit his head. The husband also said the man appeared to lose consciousness.

Witnesses shared video of the confrontation with investigators, but the camera angle from which the footage was recorded made it difficult to determine who started the incident. Police said the video showed the husband swinging a metal water bottle and striking one man in the face, and that man fell to the ground. The footage also appeared to show the husband striking the second man with the bottle before continuing to fight with him. Police said the wife joined the confrontation and pushed one of the men.

The men later said they had serious injuries from the alleged attack. One suffered a broken jaw, a fractured skull, and bleeding in the brain, and the other said he needed seven stitches for chin injuries and suffered several scrapes and a broken hip after the wife tackled him into the bushes.

The Sugar Land Police Department arrested the couple, who were booked into the Fort Bend County Jail and later released after each posted bond. The husband faces two counts of assault causing bodily injury, while his wife faces one count of the same charge.
