A man in northeastern Kansas was jailed after allegedly using a hammer to violently attack an elderly woman in the parking lot of a Whole Foods grocery store.
It was reported that early in the afternoon on November 30, an 85-year-old woman was at the Olathe Pointe Shopping Center in the parking lot near a Whole Foods Market when a man she did not know approached her. According to someone identified as a witness, he heard what sounded like a loud scream and went to see what was going on. When he got near the spot where the sound originated, he reportedly saw a man striking an elderly woman in the head with a hammer. He, along with other individuals in the lot, stepped in to protect the alleged victim.
The authorities were notified, and law enforcement went to the location to investigate. When they arrived, they reported that the alleged victim was lying on the ground in the parking lot with what appeared to be severe injuries on her face and head. She was quickly taken to a local hospital, where she underwent surgery for fractures.
The man was taken into custody and booked into the Johnson County Jail. He is facing a preliminary charge of felony aggravated battery, knowingly causing great bodily harm or disfigurement. At the time this was written, facility records showed that the suspect was being held in lieu of a $35,000 bond.
It was reported that the alleged victim was admitted to the intensive care unit after her surgical procedure. The authorities are still investigating the incident and announced that they have not yet found the reason it occurred.
