Iowa Corrections Officer Charged for Sex with Inmate

A woman who worked as a jailer in a county jail in Iowa has been accused of having sexual relations with one of the inmates at the facility for several months.

27-year-old Kayla Mae Bergom is from Belle Plain. Bergom was employed as a corrections officer at the Tama County Jail in Toledo, Iowa, for three years.

In September 2020, Bergom allegedly got intimately close with a 29-year-old inmate at the jail. The name of the other party has not been released at this time.

Bergom and the inmate reportedly started a sexual relationship that lasted for seven months.

According to reports, Bergom and the inmate found several spots in the jail where they could be intimate, such as the utility closet and the recreation yard.

A county employee reported to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) that they suspected a sexual relationship might have been going on between Bergom and the inmate.

DCI began investigating the claims. They alleged that they discovered at least three sexual encounters between Bergom and the inmate, which confirmed the suspicions of the person who informed them.

On April 20, Tama County Sheriff’s Department deputies acted on a warrant and took Bergom into custody. She was later released on bond.

In May, Bergom was charged with three counts of aggravated misdemeanor sexual misconduct with an offender.

Bergom has entered a plea of not guilty to the allegations. She is scheduled to appear in court for trial on August 12.

If  Bergom is convicted, she could spend up to six years in jail.

It is reported that Bergom resigned from her position and is no longer a Tama County employee.
