Former NFL quarterback and current TV analyst Mark Sanchez was hospitalized and later arrested after a bizarre and violent encounter in downtown Indianapolis early Saturday morning.
According to reports, the altercation began when Sanchez allegedly assaulted a worker delivering cooking oil to a hotel and resulted in the retired football player being stabbed multiple times.
According to the affidavit, officers were summoned to Loughmiller’s Pub and Eatery around 12:30 a.m. They found that Sanchez was suffering from several stab wounds to his upper torso. In an alley between two hotels, a 69-year-old man was also found with a cut on his cheek. First responders rushed Sanchez to a local hospital, and when he was asked about the situation, he reportedly told investigators he couldn’t remember all the details of what had happened.
Detectives reviewed surveillance footage that allegedly showed Sanchez approaching a large box truck parked outside the Westin Hotel. The worker, who was employed by a company that handles commercial cooking oil and recycling, was performing his regular duties when Sanchez allegedly began talking to him. The footage reportedly appeared to show the worker trying to walk away before Sanchez allegedly began chasing him around the truck. Sanchez reportedly grabbed and threw the delivery driver against a wall and wrestled him to the ground.
The victim told the authorities that he believed Sanchez smelled like alcohol and had slurred speech. He added that Sanchez told him the hotel manager had said he “wasn’t allowed to be there.” When the worker tried to contact his manager to see what was going on, Sanchez allegedly blocked him from reaching his phone and stopped him from getting into his truck. After allegedly being shoved, the worker sprayed Sanchez with pepper spray. The fight escalated, and the worker pulled out a knife and stabbed Sanchez several times in an act he described as self-defense.
Sanchez was arrested later at the hospital. He is facing preliminary charges of battery, unlawful entry to a motor vehicle, and public intoxication.
