According to authorities, the incident happened around 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot of a Planet Fitness in Crossroads Plaza. A man was standing outside the gym when another man approached him. The two reportedly spoke briefly before the situation escalated. The second man allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots at close range.
Afterwards, the shooter allegedly continued the attack by striking the victim several times. He then reportedly walked back to his vehicle, left the scene, and drove toward Connellsville.
The authorities were notified, and first responders arrived to find the alleged victim suffering from several gunshot wounds, including injuries to his shoulder, hip, thigh, and buttocks. It was also reported that he had multiple cuts to his face, head, and hand, which were consistent with a physical assault. The alleged victim was transported for medical treatment, and the police later reported that he narrowly survived the attack.
Investigators said the alleged victim received immediate assistance from people at the gym, including a nurse who happened to be present. They helped to control the bleeding until the emergency crews arrived.
State police spoke to the alleged victim, who reportedly identified the shooter as the estranged husband of the woman he was dating. According to investigators, witness statements and surveillance video from the area were consistent with the victim’s account. Police also traced a black Ford truck seen leaving the scene back to the suspect.
While officers were preparing to locate him, they learned the suspect had already turned himself in at the Connellsville Police Department. Authorities said he had visible cuts on his hands and blood on his shoes when he surrendered.
The man was taken into custody and booked into the Westmoreland County Prison. He is facing preliminary charges of attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and misdemeanor stalking. He is currently being held without bail.
According to reports, the alleged victim is expected to make a full recovery.
