A registered sex offender is facing a new charge after police say he used camera-equipped sunglasses to record children at Boston Common.
Boston police began investigating the 60-year-old Brockton man after witnesses reported seeing him record children at the Frog Pond four days earlier. It was reported that he is registered as a level three sex offender and has 10 convictions involving child sex offenses.
Officers were called to the Frog Pond around 1 p.m. Friday after witnesses reported seeing the man record children with camera sunglasses and a cell phone. Police also learned that witnesses allegedly saw him recording a family while they were changing their children’s clothes. The children were covered with towels to protect their privacy, but witnesses said the man followed the family after they moved away and continued recording with the sunglasses. The family and other witnesses had left the Frog Pond by the time officers arrived.
Additional witnesses confronted the man, police said. He allegedly removed the sunglasses and tried to break them. Officers found the damaged glasses in his hands when they arrived. He told police that a group had assaulted him and tried to take the sunglasses. Police took the sunglasses and his cell phone as part of the investigation.
Officers and U.S. Marshals arrested the man Tuesday at his Brockton home. He was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court and pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
His attorney requested $1,000 bail and argued that the person who called police had not witnessed the alleged recording. Prosecutors sought $100,000, but the judge set bail at $250,000.
If released, the man would be barred from being around children, entering Boston, or using the internet. He would also be required to wear a GPS monitoring device at home. The judge said bail could be reduced if police do not find illicit images on his electronic devices.
