On July 24, a man was driving a Toyota Camry on State Highway 11 at the same time and place that a man and three children were riding in an Amish buggy. According to reports, onlookers saw the car collide with the buggy, causing the horse to run away with the carriage. They reported that the driver of the car only stayed long enough to inspect his vehicle before he left the scene. The authorities were notified, and law enforcement and ambulances went to the location. They noted that the youngsters were injured and needed medical attention, and they were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department found the 21-year-old suspect at his home, and they reported that the car they believed he was driving during the incident was covered with a tarp. He allegedly smelled like alcohol when he was taken into custody. After a trip to the hospital, he was booked on multiple preliminary charges, including four counts of first-degree assault, tampering with physical evidence, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to render aid, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol – first offense, driving on a suspended license, and failing to maintain insurance on his vehicle. The man had his blood drawn to check his BAC, but at the time this was written, the results were unknown.
