The shop’s assistant manager called 911 immediately after a woman, believed to be the child’s mother, allegedly walked away from the business and left the baby and stroller with the employees. The woman had reportedly asked the assistant manager and another employee to care for the baby while she took care of something. She also mentioned paperwork inside a bag and said the workers could keep the child if she did not come back.
The assistant manager reported that she had seen the woman walking near the business before, but they had never spoken. The woman had reportedly arrived at the service bay while the assistant manager was starting her shift. She asked the two employees whether they thought the baby was cute, and they said she was. After the woman left, the assistant manager checked on the infant and found that the baby had a soaked diaper and rashes on her neck and body.
According to reports, approximately 15 minutes after leaving the baby at the shop, the woman returned carrying a knife. She allegedly demanded that the employees give her the baby and said she needed to leave because something had happened. The assistant manager was still on the phone with emergency dispatchers, and they instructed the workers not to let the woman leave with the infant. After officers arrived, paramedics took the child for a medical evaluation.
The 35-year-old woman was taken into custody on allegations of child abandonment and reckless conduct. Police have not said where the child will be placed after being medically cleared from the hospital.
