Woman Struck Child for Weight Shaming Her on Plane

A woman from Maryland may face a felony charge in Florida for allegedly hitting a juvenile on an airplane after he repeatedly mocked her over her weight and called her “Miss Piggy.”

On the afternoon of May 28, a group of travelers, including an underage boy, boarded a plane at the Orlando-Sanford International Airport to return home to Maryland after they had gone on a trip to visit Disney World. A 46-year-old woman in the party was seated next to the juvenile, and they reportedly immediately began acting hostile towards each other. According to reports, the boy got irritated because she was using the armrest and he thought she was taking up too much space. He shoved her arm a couple of times, in addition to calling her “fat” and “Miss Piggy.”

The woman, who later reported to the police that the juvenile had treated her poorly during the entire vacation, allegedly responded to his behavior by taking away his cell phone. According to the police report, after he pushed her arm off the armrest the second time, she hit him in the face. Though they did not see what happened, the flight crew was told there was an incident occurring, and the authorities were notified.

Airport Police responded, and they spoke to the people involved, in addition to individuals on the plane who said they witnessed what happened. They reportedly told an investigating officer that the woman hit the boy in the head with a beverage bottle and slammed it into the plane window.

The woman was taken into custody and charged with one count of cruelty toward a child by abuse without great bodily harm, a third-degree felony. A judge set her bond at $10,000, and upon her release, she is not allowed to have any contact with the alleged victim.
