On the afternoon of June 18, a 33-year-old woman from East McKeesport was driving a Chevy Equinox in Allegheny County with her 4-year-old son as a passenger. She reportedly stopped and got out of the vehicle, and then climbed back in.
A concerned citizen saw the occurrence, and they called the authorities to report it. Officers were dispatched to the area to search for the vehicle and investigate the situation.
When the police saw the vehicle, they reported that the driver failed to halt at a stop sign, and they performed a traffic stop. The woman, who was reportedly weeping, pulled over without incident.
Officers approached the vehicle and reported that they noticed there was a youngster in the automobile without a seat belt or child safety chair. They also noted that they believed the woman looked like she was under the influence.
After allegedly performing poorly on roadside sobriety tests, the woman was asked to consent to a blood test. She did not allow the authorities to draw her blood, though, according to reports, it is illegal to refuse a blood test in the state of Pennsylvania.
An officer was with the youngster, and the boy allegedly said his mother told him to hide her medicine. He then reportedly handed the officer a coin purse containing several small baggies filled with something that appeared to be heroin.
The woman was taken into custody and booked into the Allegheny County Jail. She is facing several charges including driving under the influence and endangering the welfare of a child.
