A Michigan couple was accused of using an explosive device during a neighborhood dispute after investigators said one of them threw it into an elderly neighbor’s yard as the other allegedly lit the fuse.
The incident allegedly happened on August 3 outside the couple’s residence. According to prosecutors, the device was a red cylinder with the words “BYE BYE” written on it. Authorities said the fuse was lit before the device was thrown into the neighboring yard, where a 72-year-old resident put it out before it exploded.
After investigating the incident, the authorities executed a search warrant at the couple’s home. Investigators reportedly recovered firearms, ammunition, and components believed to be used in making explosive devices, leading to additional criminal allegations.
Both suspects were arrested and charged with placing explosives near property and possessing bombs with unlawful intent. One of the defendants also faced additional felony charges, including possession of firearms and ammunition by a prohibited person, two felony-firearm counts, and a habitual offender enhancement that could significantly increase the potential sentence if convicted.
The alleged victim later told a local television station he had just returned from the grocery store when he looked outside and saw the device thrown into his yard. He said he watched it spark and smoke while fearing it would explode, but it never detonated.
The neighbor also claimed the incident followed years of ongoing problems with the couple, alleging previous encounters involving explosive devices near his property. Other nearby residents reportedly described frequent disturbances at the home and said they were surprised by the large police response, but relieved arrests had been made.
A judge set cash bonds for both defendants and ordered GPS monitoring if they are released. They are also prohibited from contact with the alleged victim, while one defendant was additionally barred from returning to the residence because of its proximity to the neighbor.
