Driver Arrested for 10th DUI After Crashing into Patrol Vehicle

A man with nine priors was arrested last weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol a tenth time after reportedly smashing into the back of a police vehicle at a red light.

Late in the afternoon on November 24, a man from Middletown, Delaware, was driving a Dodge Ram on Route 13 when he approached a red light. An officer with the New Castle County Division of Police had already come to a full stop, and the man reportedly slammed into their patrol vehicle. According to reports, instead of stopping to discuss the incident, the driver put the truck in reverse, turned around, and drove in the opposite direction in an alleged attempt to escape.

The officer’s vehicle was still operable, and they began pursuing the suspect. They reported that the man failed to stop at several red lights while they chased him. When the driver reached Boyd’s Center, he pulled into a Wawa convenience store parking lot. The officer was able to stop him, and they believed he was intoxicated.

The man was taken into custody and brought to the New Castle County Police headquarters. He is facing multiple preliminary charges including one felony count of driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, one felony count of disregarding a police officer’s signal, one felony count of noncompliance with conditions of recognizance bond or conditions, one misdemeanor count of leaving the scene of a property collision accident, one misdemeanor count of driving while suspended or revoked, and traffic violations for limitations on turning around, and failure to signal continuously. After his arraignment, he was booked into the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $36,200 cash bail.

It was reported that the officer involved in the incident was not injured.
