Police in Grand Junction arrested the 18-year-old student after obtaining a search warrant. According to the Grand Junction Police Department, officers recovered a gun, a substance they suspected was cocaine, alcohol, drug paraphernalia, and identification cards bearing another person’s name.
The student was taken to the Mesa County Detention Facility and charged with first-degree criminal trespass of an inhabited dwelling, obstruction of telephone service, unlawful possession of a firearm at school, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, minor in possession of alcohol, criminal possession of an identification document, and domestic violence.
Colorado Mesa University officials worked with police during the investigation and suspended the student immediately following his arrest.
Despite the allegations involving a firearm on campus, police said they believe the incident was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The investigation began after officers responded to a reported dispute involving two Colorado Mesa University students early Sunday morning. Police initially found no probable cause to make an arrest.
Later in the day, officers received additional information about the incident and continued investigating.
Police said the student had been allowed inside the dormitory but allegedly went into a woman’s room without her consent. The two became involved in an argument that reportedly turned physical.
According to investigators, the man allegedly took the woman’s phone, preventing her from contacting police. Her roommates reportedly woke up during the confrontation and entered the room, and the man left.
Officers believed there was probable cause for an arrest and received information indicating the student may have had access to a firearm on campus. Investigators obtained the search warrant that resulted in the discovery of the alleged evidence.
