DUI Suspect Accused of Xanax-Fueled Multi-County Crash Spree

Authorities in Georgia reported that a man is facing numerous charges after an extended series of car crashes and dangerous driving incidents across multiple counties, all allegedly while under the influence of Xanax.

The chain of events unfolded on a Wednesday afternoon, beginning in Johns Creek and continuing through Fulton and Gwinnett counties. It was reported that the situation started when a beige Volvo struck several vehicles in Johns Creek. Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly continued driving until they reached Duluth, where additional cars were hit. Just before 5:00 PM, the police were notified, and the callers reported that the Volvo was in the wrong lane and had crossed over a median at one point.

When officers arrived in the area, they found three drivers who described narrowly avoiding more serious collisions. One car was hit, another said their vehicle was sideswiped, and another driver explained they had to swerve quickly to avoid a head-on crash. The Volvo itself came to a stop on the edge of a landscaped median in front of a Popeyes restaurant. The vehicle appeared heavily damaged from multiple impacts.

Witnesses said the driver had gone to the Popeyes, where, according to police, he sat at a table after ordering food and watched what was going on outside. When the man came out of the restaurant, officers detained him without further incident.

Law enforcement noted that the man’s eyelids looked heavy, and they believed he had slurred speech. When they searched the Volvo, the police reported that they found a recently filled prescription bottle containing Xanax inside the damaged Volvo. An officer later concluded that the driver appeared to be under the influence of a central nervous system depressant. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and charged with DUI, reckless driving, hit-and-run, and driving on the wrong side of the road.
