A man in North Carolina was taken into custody after authorities said he allegedly fired gunshots into a moving vehicle carrying five people, following a series of events that began earlier that night.
According to the authorities, the incident took place on April 4 at around 11:30 p.m. after a group had been out together near a shopping area in Charlotte. Investigators said the group later left and continued driving through the city.
Officers reported that they met with the group a short time after the shooting at another location. The individuals told authorities they had been followed by someone they knew. Investigators later reviewed traffic camera footage, which reportedly showed flashes coming from a vehicle alongside theirs, along with damage to the car’s windows.
Authorities said the situation may have been triggered by a prank. According to the report, a male friend allegedly called the suspect and pretended that the suspect’s girlfriend was being unfaithful. Investigators said the suspect had been in a relationship with the woman for several months and was reportedly able to track her location.
At some point after the call, the suspect allegedly began following the group’s vehicle while they were traveling on a city road. The authorities said he was reportedly driving aggressively and trying to get them to pull over. The woman told investigators she believed the suspect fired a gun into the air during the pursuit.
The incident escalated when both vehicles reached an intersection. Authorities said the suspect pulled alongside the group and allegedly fired three shots into their car before leaving the area. No injuries were reported.
The suspect was booked into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center and reportedly faced multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, domestic violence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
