Man Arrested for 8th DUI After Flipping Vehicle

A Delaware man was taken into custody for suspicion of his eighth DUI and many additional charges after the vehicle he was driving flipped over during an accident and injured two passengers.

Just before 3:00 PM on April 11, 50-year-old Richard Cook was driving a Nissan Quest in Georgetown. He had a 49-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man riding as passengers in the vehicle.

It was reported that Cook, who is a convicted felon with a suspended driver’s license, lost control of the car. The vehicle left the road and flipped over on its side as it entered a wooded area.

The Delaware State Police went to the location of the accident and discovered that the two passengers had been injured. They were transported to Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus for medical treatment.

The police noted that Cook did not currently have a valid license to drive.

It was also reported that the authorities believed Cook, who has seven prior DUIs, was under the influence.

Cook is prohibited from possessing weapons due to his felony record, and when they searched the vehicle, it was reported that the authorities found two knives and a revolver. They also allegedly found approximately 2 grams of marijuana, a liquid substance that they purported to be heroin, and drug paraphernalia.

Cook was placed under arrest and booked into the Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of a $39,501 cash bond. He is facing charges for 8th offense DUI, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, and two counts of carrying a concealed deadly weapon, all felonies. He is additionally accused of second-degree vehicular assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and driving with a suspended or revoked license.
