A Minnesota man was charged after the authorities said he allegedly drove a vehicle toward two campground workers at a regional park.
According to the authorities, the incident happened early in the afternoon on July 14 after campground employees were collecting trash near several campsites. The alleged victims reportedly heard an argument coming from a nearby campsite and looked in that direction, where they allegedly saw a man arguing with his girlfriend.
Prosecutors alleged the man became angry after noticing the workers watching the argument. He reportedly yelled at them, swore at them, and told them to stop looking toward his campsite before getting into a maroon sedan.
According to the authorities, the vehicle was allegedly driven through multiple campsites and around a picnic table before driving directly toward one of the alleged victims. Prosecutors said the second worker yelled for her husband to move because she believed he was about to be hit. The authorities said the vehicle reportedly came within a few feet of him before making a wide turn and driving toward the woman.
The authorities said the alleged victim ran behind a large oak tree for protection as the vehicle reportedly came within a couple of feet of the tree. A camper who witnessed the incident reportedly confirmed the campground workers’ accounts.
The authorities later located the suspect and arrested him. He was charged with two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one misdemeanor count of fleeing a peace officer by means other than a motor vehicle.
According to the authorities, the man told them he was upset because the campground workers had been looking toward his campsite. He allegedly told them, “I didn’t try to run anyone over, I think they thought that.” According to the complaint, a deputy noted that the statement was unusual because the authorities had not yet mentioned allegations that anyone had been targeted with the vehicle. Court records showed the defendant later posted a $10,000 bond.
