A woman was arrested after the authorities investigated a series of suspicious self-checkout transactions at a Walmart in Palm Beach County that allegedly involved barcode swapping.
The investigation focused on five transactions that investigators said took place between May 5 and June 3. Walmart records showed alleged losses of $322.68 on May 5, $99.87 on May 12, $25.81 on May 17, $190.72 on June 1, and $661.74 on June 3.
According to the authorities, the June 3 transaction first drew attention after a cart of merchandise was scanned for $105.01. Walmart later determined the items should have totaled $661.74.
Investigators said a man allegedly scanned barcodes that did not match the merchandise. A woman allegedly pushed the cart toward the exit while the man followed behind her. When a Walmart asset protection investigator asked to check the receipt, the man handed it over.
The authorities said both suspects then ran from the store toward the parking lot, leaving the merchandise behind in the cart. Investigators were able to review the receipt and the items left behind during the incident.
After reviewing surveillance footage and vehicle records, deputies connected a green Toyota Corolla to the investigation. The vehicle was registered to the woman who was later arrested.
The next day, deputies located the Toyota outside an apartment complex. Investigators said a man believed to be connected to the case drove away in the vehicle and allegedly refused to stop for a marked patrol vehicle. The attempted traffic stop was ended because of safety concerns.
The Toyota was later found abandoned with the engine running and the keys still inside. Investigators said the woman was later seen near the area carrying what appeared to be men’s clothing and using a cellphone.
The woman was arrested on felony charges of aggravated retail theft, organized scheme to defraud, and accessory after the fact. Investigators said a male co-defendant had not been taken into custody when the paperwork was filed.
