Man Grappled with Police After Stealing Drinks from Starbucks

An Arizona man reportedly broke police equipment and assaulted three officers while resisting being arrested for allegedly stealing a few drinks from a Starbucks.

Late in the afternoon on May 16, a 31-year-old man visited a Starbucks in Maricopa. He ordered a few drinks, but before paying for them he allegedly ran out the door with the beverages.

The alleged theft was reported to the authorities, and officers with the Maricopa Police Department were dispatched to the coffee shop.

According to reports, the man took off in the direction of a nearby Denny’s restaurant. One of the officers tried to interact with him, but the man allegedly ran away before they were able.

There were officers on both sides of the highway, and the man reportedly darted across the street where the police were able to investigate the claims against him.

It was reported that the suspect would not cooperate with the officers when he was told to put his hands on the police car. The officers attempted to cuff him, but the man continued to struggle. He was able to break free of their grasp before they could affix the handcuffs.

The grappling was taken down to the ground, and one of the radio earpieces and a pair of pants from an officer’s uniform were damaged in the process.

The suspect was taken into custody and incarcerated in the Pinal County jail. He may face charges of criminal damage, theft, obstructing a public thoroughfare, crossing a road other than at a crosswalk, resisting arrest, and three counts of aggravated assault. He is being held in lieu of a $5,000 bond.

His preliminary hearing is currently scheduled for early this week.

The earpiece and pants were estimated as holding a total worth of $300.
