Man Injured Officers and Bit K9 During Arrest for 3rd DUI

A Wilmington man suspected of his third DUI allegedly bit a K9 and injured two additional officers during his arrest.

Around 1:30 AM on July 8, an officer from the Delaware State Police reportedly saw a Toyota Camry speeding on the Philadelphia Pike.

The officer performed a traffic stop, and the driver pulled into a parking lot before coming to a halt.

According to reports, the driver got out of the vehicle and was reportedly entirely uncooperative with the police. When they tried to detain him with the assistance of their K9 officer, the man allegedly bit the K9 several times.

When they gained control of the man, they reportedly smelled alcohol coming from his breath and determined that he had been driving under the influence. They also noted that he was injured during their struggle, so he was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a cut above one of his eyes.

While at the hospital, the suspect allegedly continued to resist and fight, and two officers were reportedly injured when they were struck by the man. Both officers and the K9 required medical attention.

After he was released from the hospital, the man was booked into the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution for two counts of assaulting a police officer in the second degree, two counts of resisting arrest with force or violence, and one count each of assault on a law enforcement animal in the first degree, driving under the influence of alcohol (third offense), resisting arrest, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, failure to have required insurance, speeding, and duty to sign and carry a license. He is being held in lieu of a $34,200 cash bond.
