A Rockford man may face several charges after deputies stopped a Jeep and found suspected drugs and a possible license violation.
According to reports, the suspect was on probation and did not have a valid driver’s license when the traffic stop took place on the evening of September 15. The authorities said deputies initially noticed the Jeep because of its heavily tinted windows.
A check of the license plate reportedly showed the Jeep was registered to someone with a revoked driver’s license, and the deputies pulled them over.
The suspect reportedly told police he had rented the Jeep through Turo. The vehicle’s owner confirmed that the suspect had rented it but could not provide police with any proof.
While speaking with the suspect, deputies said they noticed a strong smell of cannabis coming from the Jeep. They also noted that the suspect was nervous. One of the deputies reportedly saw a plastic bag sticking out of the suspect’s waistband. After the man was removed from the vehicle and searched, police said they found nearly 20 grams of what appeared to be cocaine. Additionally, police reportedly found 6.28 grams of cannabis in a bag located between the center console and passenger seat, and the man was carrying over $1,100 in cash.
A K9 also searched the vehicle, and it was reported that .02 grams of a substance believed to be fentanyl was hidden in a seat.
The authorities later measured the Jeep’s front driver-side window tint and determined that it had 45% opacity. Illinois law permits up to 35% opacity for the front side windows.
The suspect was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, excessive window tint, and driving without a valid license.
