A Florida deputy was arrested after he allegedly got into a car accident in an unmarked sheriff’s office vehicle while reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
In May, a deputy who has been with the Broward Sheriff’s Office for five years was driving in an unmarked Ford Taurus at approximately 6:30 am.
The deputy, who was not on duty at the time, was allegedly driving an estimated 77 MPH, though the posted speed limit was 45 MPH.
When he was reportedly going approximately 71 MPH, the Ford struck a 2018 KIA Sportage causing the vehicle to hit a tree and roll over, which turned the KIA upside down.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office was notified by the deputy, and they sent officers to the scene. When they arrived, they noted that the victim was severely injured. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital for medical treatment.
When the authorities interacted with the deputy, they reported that he smelled like he had been drinking alcoholic beverages. They also alleged that he was speaking in a manner that indicated he was drunk when he called dispatch after the accident.
An investigation was opened, and it was asserted that the deputy caused the crash due to drinking and driving.
On the afternoon of September 12, the authorities arrested the deputy. He is facing charges for suspicion of DUI causing serious bodily injury to another, DUI with damage to property or a person of another, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, and reckless driving causing damage to a person or property.
Since he was taken into custody his status changed from suspended with pay to suspended without pay.
In a release from the sheriff’s office about the incident, the sheriff said, “It is never ok to drive under the influence or in a reckless manner that puts lives at risk.”
