Last May, two teacher’s assistants reported that a special education teacher at Grassfield Elementary School in Chesapeake, Virginia, was treating some of her students abusively. The assistants said they saw the teacher hurting the children in her class.
One of the three students the teacher is accused of harming is 11 years old and non-verbal. The child’s mother said her daughter had a recent behavior change, and she believed it was due to the alleged mistreatment of the girl.
The youngster’s mom said she was informed in June that the teacher allegedly used a spray bottle filled with water to squirt her. She also claimed that the woman would yell at her child and grab the girl by the face in an aggressive manner.
On June 23, the child’s mother filed charges against the teacher.
Two other families of children in the woman’s class reported that they believed their youngsters were also being abused, and they are also going to file charges against her.
On August 30, the teacher was placed under arrest on suspicion of two counts of assault and battery for the allegations.
Child Protective Services investigated the claims when they were initially made, and they plan to investigate a second time.
A spokesperson for Chesapeake Public Schools said, “The School Division can confirm that misdemeanor allegations of assault and battery have been made by a student’s parent and that [the suspect] has been placed on administrative leave.” They also added that “Chesapeake Public Schools and Child Protective Services investigated these allegations previously and believed them to be unfounded.”
