Teacher Held Student and Invited Classmates to Punch Him

An elementary and middle school teacher is facing charges for allegedly holding a student with his arms pinned behind his back while inviting his classmates to punch him.

50-year-old Craig Schmeckpeper lives in North Bend. Until recently, he was employed at North Bend Central teaching physical education to elementary and middle school students. According to the school website, he was also the head coach for junior high school football, in addition to assistant varsity track coach.

Last February, Schmeckpeper was teaching physical education to a class of elementary school students.

The man reportedly grabbed one of the boys and held his arms behind his back. While the child was allegedly restricted by Schmeckpeper, the man reportedly encouraged his classmates to hit him. It was reported that Schmeckpeper told the students they could take “free punches” at the child as they walked past.

During the investigation of the incident, it was reportedly found that five of the child’s classmates struck him lightly. When the security camera footage was reviewed, the authorities said it showed proof that Schmeckpeper physically detained the child while his classmates hit him.

At a board meeting on March 21, Schmeckpeper turned in his resignation from North Bend Central.

On the morning of March 25, 3 days after a warrant for his arrest was obtained, Schmeckpeper turned himself in for the allegations at the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office. He was booked into the Dodge County Jail for suspicion of felony child abuse not resulting in serious injury.

If Schmeckpeper is convicted as charged, he could face a sentence of up to 3 years in prison and a possible fine of $10,000.

It was reported that the boy was not seriously harmed during the alleged incident, but he said Schmeckpeper hurt his arms by holding him so tightly.
