The offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans was arrested after accusations that he was driving under the influence after a flight home when the team won a game against the Green Bay Packers.
42-year-old Todd Downing has been working with the Tennessee Titans since January 2019. He began as the tight ends coach, and he was given a promotion to the position of offensive coordinator last year.
On November 17, the Titans flew to Green Bay, Wisconsin, where they played and won a game against the Packers.
Right after the game, the Titans went back to Nashville on an NFL plane.
Around 2:30 am, Downing was reportedly driving down Interstate 65 after leaving the sports arena.
A trooper with the Tennessee Highway Patrol reportedly saw the man’s vehicle traveling faster than the posted speed limit.
The driver was pulled over and identified as Downing.
When the deputy spoke to him, they reported that the smell of alcohol was emanating from inside of the man’s vehicle. They also noted that Downing showed physical signs of being intoxicated.
Downing was placed under arrest and booked into the Williamson County Jail. He is expected to face charges for suspicion of DUI and speeding. He posted bond within a couple of hours, and he was released from custody.
This is not Downing’s first DUI arrest.
The NFL is conducting an internal investigation, and they reported having concerns that Downing may have been drinking alcohol on the plane when the team was returning from Green Bay. The NFL has a policy prohibiting the consumption of alcohol on team transportation.
So far, nothing has been released showing that Downing was drinking on the airplane.
