A Michigan man was taken into custody when he was accused of several illegal acts after he ran out of gas while allegedly fleeing from the scene of a theft crime in which he was reportedly involved.
Just before 10:00 PM on March 12, a home burglary alarm at a Morton Township residence sounded, and the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office received an alert.
Deputies were dispatched to the address, and when they arrived, they reported that they saw a car parked in front of the home. As they approached the scene, the deputies said that the driver of the vehicle sped away.
The deputies were able to take down the license plate number before the vehicle was out of sight. When they ran a check on the car, they found that someone in Grand Rapids had reported it stolen.
The police began to chase the suspected thief, and they pursued the vehicle down Highway M-20 for a few miles.
According to reports, the car being chased suddenly slowed to a halt on the road.
The deputies approached and identified the driver as North Shores resident Jared Thielbar.
It was additionally reported that the reason Thielbar stopped in the allegedly stolen automobile is that he neglected to stop for gas on his way to the scene of the robbery and ran out during the chase.
Thielbar, who allegedly broke into the home and stole gas, was placed under arrest and booked into the Mecosta County Jail. He is accused of fleeing and eluding, breaking and entering, motor vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and open intoxicants in a motor vehicle. He was incarcerated in lieu of a $35,000 bond.
