Trooper Defied Direct Police Warning Against Driving Drunk

After police told a state trooper not to drive his vehicle when they suspected he was intoxicated, the man allegedly got into the car and drove away.

Andrew Murphy has been a Connecticut State trooper with the State Police Department since the summer of 2019. He works with Troop A in Southbury.

Around 2:00 am on June 20, Murphy was reportedly in a parking lot in Bethel.

An officer with the Bethel Police Department said they saw a person stumbling around, and they identified him as Murphy.

The officer reportedly asserted that Murphy, who was off-duty, was under the influence of alcohol and told the man not to operate his vehicle.

Murphy reportedly dismissed the officer’s advice and climbed into his car, and allegedly pulled out of the parking lot and drove away.

The officer got into his vehicle and turned on his lights and sirens, but reported that Murphy did not pull over.

The man reportedly made it to his house and entered his driveway before interacting with the officer that pursued him.

When Murphy got out of his vehicle, the officer reported that a DUI investigation was initiated. After being told to remain outside the car, Murphy allegedly re-entered his automobile.

Murphy was taken out of the vehicle and placed under arrest. It is expected that he will face charges for suspicion of DUI, disobeying signals from an officer, and interfering with police.

The latter of the charges was added because the officer who reportedly saw Murphy in the lot and told him not to drive is considered a witness.

Murphy, who has a hearing on June 28, was released from custody on bond.

The department put Murphy on desk duty as a result of the allegations.
